Book of the Month #1

On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Hey guys!! Sorry, I haven’t updated in a while. I was busy with exams and I didn’t have time to write. However, I did have time to do a bit of reading. Along with interviews and talking about my favourite authors, I’ll be recommending a book each month for anyone who is interested! I’ll be recommending books that I might have recently read or read years ago. They will be worth the read.

This week, I am recommending On the Road by Jack Kerouac. It is one of the classics and it has been read by thousands of people around the world. If you are into literature and works by classical writers, this would be one of them! I have been planning to read this for years. I read it recently while I was on holidays in Nice and it blew me away! The book is about an aspiring writer, Sal Paradise and his adventures travelling across America with his friend, Dean Moriarty in the sixties. On the Road is based on adventures Kerouac experienced in his youth. Through his writing and the character of Sal Paradise, he depicts the wild atmosphere of travelling into the unknown and not questioning it. Kerouac wrote this story in a vivid atmosphere and created amazing depth to his characters.

Dean Moriarty was the most intriguing character in the book. He was a very outgoing person that loved travelling and he had the effect of bringing the most unlikely people together such as Marylou and Sal. However, this outgoing exterior laid out a disguise to Dean’s interior demons.

Kerouac gives so much descriptive details of his surroundings and the exact journey he goes on, that it feels like you are in the car with him, experiencing the same life lessons as he is. It was slow reading at first due to the different writing style Kerouac used. But that’s what made the story all the more interesting! It was also created a window into a time in history filled with music, discovery and bad fashion (that’s just my opinion). I really enjoyed this novel and I plan on reading it again.

If you are interested in the novel, check it out. It is worth the read. Ill updating more often since my exams are over. Expect more blog entries in the next week! See yee next time!
